The West Bengal Health Department has received numerous complaints from students about an “intimidating culture” in government hospitals and medical colleges, along with issues regarding dishonesty in the examination system. These complaints emerged following the alleged rape and murder incident at Kar Hospital.
A senior health official stated that all complaints have been forwarded to the state-level grievance redressal committee, which was established on Tuesday evening in response to the junior doctors’ movement. The committee aims to address grievances within the health sector.
An official from the health department, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that while the exact number of complaints is unknown, all the grievances have been submitted to the redressal committee for review. Another official added that complaints have been received from several of the 25 medical colleges and hospitals run by the state government.
The formation of the grievance committee and the forwarding of complaints are seen as steps toward addressing the concerns raised by students, ensuring that the issues related to intimidation and unfair practices in the health sector are investigated and resolved effectively.
