Six US lawmakers have raised concerns over the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) decision to prosecute Indian industrialist Gautam Adani’s group in an alleged bribery case. They fear this could harm relations between the US and India, a key ally.
The lawmakers—Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopoulos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin—wrote to US Attorney General Pamela Bedi on February 10. They highlighted ‘controversial decisions’ taken by the DOJ under President Joe Biden’s administration.
The case involves allegations that Adani’s group paid $250 million in bribes to Indian officials to secure solar power contracts. US prosecutors claim that Adani Group did not disclose this information to US banks and investors from whom they raised billions of dollars for the project.
Under US law, foreign corruption cases can be prosecuted if they affect US investors or markets. However, the Adani Group has strongly denied all allegations.
The lawmakers are concerned that such legal actions could strain US-India relations. They urged the DOJ to reconsider its approach, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties with India.
