Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday morning when a speeding Porsche, allegedly driven by a 17-year-old, collided with a motorcycle, instantly killing two riders in the Kalyani Nagar area. The incident occurred around 3:15 am, with the car reportedly traveling at a staggering 200 km/h.
The young driver, whose name is withheld due to his age, had been celebrating his class 12 exam results at a local pub just hours before the crash. CCTV footage from the establishment shows the teenager consuming alcohol. Police have indicated that the preliminary investigation suggests he was intoxicated at the time of the accident, though the official blood test results are still pending.
The victims, Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both 24-year-old IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh, were returning home with friends on motorbikes after a party when they were struck by the Porsche at the Kalyani Nagar junction. Both died from their injuries on the spot.
The Juvenile Justice Board granted bail to the teenager on Monday, stipulating that he must write a 300-word essay as part of his release conditions. However, the police intend to seek permission from a higher court to prosecute him as an adult, citing the severity of the incident.
In addition to charging the teenager, the police have also filed a case against his father, a prominent real estate developer, for negligence.
Local residents have expressed outrage, highlighting ongoing protests against the disturbances caused by pubs and bars in the area. They argue that such establishments contribute to reckless behavior and have been a persistent issue.
This incident has reignited debates over juvenile justice and the responsibilities of parents in monitoring their children’s activities, particularly concerning underage drinking and driving. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of two young lives cut tragically short.
