The Supreme Court has advised Shiromani Akali Dal leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia to express regret for their remarks against retired Justice Ranjit Singh. Justice Singh had chaired the committee investigating sacrilege incidents and police firing in Punjab.
A bench comprising Justices MM Sundaresh and Arvind Kumar was hearing Justice Singh’s appeal challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s dismissal of his plea. The bench emphasized the importance of mutual respect, urging both parties to resolve the issue amicably.
The court told Badal, who was Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister at the time, that expressing regret would elevate his stature. Senior advocate Puneet Bali, representing Badal and Majithia, acknowledged the court’s suggestion and requested time to communicate this to his clients.
Addressing Justice Singh, the bench urged him to set aside personal ego and move forward, stressing that individuals in high positions should lead by example. The court has given both sides two weeks to resolve the matter.
This advice highlights the Supreme Court’s approach to maintaining dignity in public life, encouraging reconciliation over prolonged legal disputes. Both parties are expected to consider the court’s recommendation seriously.
