Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, announced today that the Supreme Court will oversee the investigation into the Hathras stampede case. Responding to a public petition, which called for a thorough inquiry by a panel of experts led by a former Supreme Court judge, Justice Chandrachud confirmed the petition’s scheduled hearing.
The committee formed for this purpose has promptly submitted its report to the Uttar Pradesh government. Subsequently, the state government took swift action by suspending six individuals, including a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and a Circle Officer, who were allegedly involved or negligent in their responsibilities.
The Hathras stampede occurred recently, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries during a religious gathering. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the gravity of the incident and aims to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the tragic event.
