In a significant development, the Supreme Court has summoned yoga guru Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurveda’s managing director, Acharya Balakrishna, to appear in person regarding a defamation case tied to the company’s product advertisements and the efficacy of their medicines. Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah expressed strong disapproval of the company’s and Balakrishna’s failure to respond to previous court notices.
They have been issued notices to explain why defamation action should not be taken against them for breaching promises made to the court. Additionally, a notice has been sent to Swami Ramdev to justify why defamation proceedings should not be initiated against him. The apex court is reviewing a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), alleging that Swami Ramdev has spearheaded a campaign against vaccination efforts and modern medicine. This summons underscores the gravity of the allegations and the court’s commitment to upholding the integrity of public discourse and medical practices.
