The Supreme Court has reserved its decision on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail pleas concerning his arrest by the CBI on June 26 in the Delhi Excise Policy scam. A bench led by Justice Surya Kant noted, “One bail case alone has consumed our whole day… We have to deal with a large number of cases… Think of other litigants too.”
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued that this is a unique case where his client has remained in jail despite the Supreme Court granting interim bail under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on May 10 and general bail on July 21. Singhvi emphasized that Kejriwal’s freedom should not be suspended due to technicalities, highlighting that other accused in the case have already been granted bail.
Singhvi urged the court to apply “common sense” in the matter, arguing that Kejriwal is not a threat to society and should be released on bail. The court has reserved its verdict after a full day of hearing the arguments.
