In a major relief to West Bengal, the Supreme Court has extended the service of recently dismissed teachers until December 31, 2025. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, acknowledged the state government’s submission that teaching in various schools was severely affected and that recruiting new staff would take time.

However, the apex court has not extended the services of Group ‘C’ and Group ‘D’ staff working in government-run and aided schools. The court directed the state government to begin the recruitment process by May 31 and complete it by December 31, 2025. It also asked the government and the West Bengal School Service Commission to submit an affidavit confirming the start of the process by the end of May.

The decision was welcomed by the Trinamool Congress, which accused opposition parties like the BJP and CPI(M) of trying to ruin the future of deserving candidates through political conspiracies. The party reaffirmed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s earlier assurance that no qualified teacher would be punished unjustly.

Posting on social media, the party stated, “The Chief Minister has always maintained that deserving teachers will not suffer unfairly. Today, the Supreme Court has allowed them to continue their service till December 31, 2025. We welcome this decision.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her gratitude for the court’s verdict. She reassured the affected teachers not to worry and said that a long-term solution to the issue would be found. The judgment brings temporary relief to thousands of teachers and ensures that academic activities in schools continue without disruption while the recruitment process gets underway.
