On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The petition was filed following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The hearing was part of a review of the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) latest status report on the case. A bench consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra presided over the matter.

During the hearing, the court strongly criticized the petitioner’s request for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, stating that such demands were outside the court’s jurisdiction. Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized, “This is not a political forum,” indicating that the court does not have the authority to intervene in political matters or demand the resignation of elected officials.

The bench reminded the petitioner, who is a lawyer, to adhere to the limits of legal protocol. The Supreme Court firmly underscored that its role is to ensure justice within the boundaries of law, not to entertain politically motivated requests.
