The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the high-level committee investigating the deaths of three civil services aspirants, who drowned in a flooded basement at a coaching center in July, to submit interim safety measures within four weeks to prevent such incidents in the future.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujal Bhuiyan emphasized the need for urgent action, directing the governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi to report on policy, legislative, and administrative changes aimed at avoiding such tragedies. The court highlighted the importance of learning from this incident to safeguard the lives of students attending coaching centers.
The bench further indicated that if required, they would consider extending directives nationwide to prevent similar accidents, referring to the Old Rajendra Nagar area where the incident occurred. The tragic deaths of the aspirants raised concerns about the safety standards in coaching centers, prompting the Supreme Court to take up the issue and push for significant reforms across regions. The case will now move forward as the court awaits the committee’s recommendations and responses from the state governments.
