The Supreme Court has introduced a new schedule allowing benches to take up both regular and urgent cases on non-miscellaneous days—Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This change was implemented shortly after Justice Sanjiv Khanna became the Chief Justice of India.
A circular issued by the Supreme Court announced the new guidelines, aiming to streamline the hearing process. Previously, cases for regular hearings were not scheduled on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The change is expected to help reduce the backlog of cases after the issuance of notices.
According to the circular, “Miscellaneous matters after the issue of notice, including transfer petitions and bail cases, will now be listed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.” This adjustment will provide flexibility to the benches in managing both urgent and pending cases more efficiently.
The move reflects Chief Justice Khanna’s focus on improving case management in the apex court and ensuring timely justice. By optimizing the schedule, the court aims to handle a wider variety of cases, addressing urgent matters while continuing with regular hearings. This step is seen as an important measure to reduce delays and improve the efficiency of the judicial process.
