Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to Speaker Om Birla, expressing his shock and dismay over the expunction of considerable portions of his recent speech in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi has requested the Speaker to restore the expunged remarks, arguing that their removal undermines the principles of parliamentary democracy.
In his letter, Gandhi stated, “I am shocked to note the manner in which a considerable portion of my speech has been simply taken off from the proceedings under the garb of expunction. Taking off from records my considered remarks goes against the very tenets of parliamentary democracy.”
Gandhi’s appeal comes amidst ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, with frequent accusations of stifling dissent and curtailing free speech within the parliamentary framework. The Congress leader emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of parliamentary proceedings and ensuring that diverse viewpoints are heard and recorded.
This development adds to the current political discourse on the role of parliamentary practices in maintaining democratic values. The response from Speaker Om Birla and the subsequent actions taken will be closely watched by political analysts and the public alike.
