Rahul Gandhi expressed deep condolences for the victims of the devastating floods in Assam, emphasizing the tragic loss of innocent children like 8-year-old Avinash. He conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families across the state, noting the severe impact of the disaster.
Briefed by Assam Congress leaders, Gandhi highlighted the grim statistics: over 60 deaths, 53,000 displaced individuals, and 2.4 million people affected by the floods. He criticized the BJP government’s handling of the situation, pointing out their unfulfilled promise of a “flood-free Assam.” The current state of affairs, he argued, reflects gross mismanagement by the double-engine government in power.
Gandhi called for a comprehensive and compassionate approach to address the crisis. He stressed the need for immediate relief, proper rehabilitation, and adequate compensation for the affected people. Additionally, he advocated for the establishment of a pan-Northeast water management authority to implement long-term measures necessary for flood control.
Reaffirming his solidarity with the people of Assam, Gandhi assured them of his support as their representative in Parliament. He urged the Central government to extend all possible assistance to the state expeditiously, ensuring that the people of Assam receive the help and support they desperately need in this challenging time.
