Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Marseille, France, where he paid tribute to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. Marseille holds historical significance as it was here that Savarkar made a daring escape attempt from British custody.
After reaching the city on Tuesday night (local time), PM Modi shared a post on X, saying, “I have reached Marseille. This city holds special importance in India’s freedom struggle. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar made a courageous attempt to escape.”
He also acknowledged the support of the people of Marseille and French activists who had opposed Savarkar’s extradition to British authorities. “Veer Savarkar’s bravery will continue to inspire generations,” he added.
Upon arrival, PM Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora. Sharing another update, he wrote, “President Emmanuel Macron and I have reached Marseille some time ago. This visit will include important programs to strengthen India-France relations. The new Indian Consulate being inaugurated will enhance people-to-people ties.”
During the visit, PM Modi and President Macron will also pay tribute to Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars at the Mazargues War Cemetery. Additionally, they will visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a symbol of global scientific cooperation.
This visit marks another step in strengthening India-France relations, with a focus on history, diplomacy, and future collaborations.
