Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed around 65 lakh property ownership cards under the SVAMITVA scheme, emphasizing its role in boosting economic activities and reducing poverty. Addressing beneficiaries via video conferencing, he stated that the initiative will help people access loans and other government schemes.
The distributed property cards cover over 50,000 villages across ten states, including Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and two Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. PM Modi highlighted that with this distribution, approximately 2.24 crore beneficiaries now hold property ownership cards.
He noted the global challenge of securing property rights, referencing a UN study that linked legal property documents to poverty alleviation. PM Modi also pointed out that in India, rural properties often lacked proper documentation, leading to disputes and economic stagnation. He said, “Many villages had significant property wealth, but without papers, it became ‘dead capital,’ unusable for income generation or loans.”
The Prime Minister criticized previous governments for not addressing these issues effectively. Central Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Minister of State SP Singh Baghel, and other officials participated in the event, joined by several Chief Ministers and Ministers digitally.
The SVAMITVA scheme is seen as a major step toward formalizing rural property ownership, enhancing economic empowerment, and fostering development.
