The Election Commission of India has congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir on the successful and peaceful completion of the recent assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar called the election a “victory for democracy,” praising the citizens for strengthening democratic foundations through their votes. He further highlighted that no incidents were reported during the final two phases of polling.
These elections, held after a decade-long gap, took place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. It was the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. The National Conference and Congress alliance emerged victorious, securing 49 out of 90 seats in the assembly. The National Conference won 42 seats, the Congress won 6, and one seat went to the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
With a strong victory, discussions are ongoing about appointing Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. The Election Commission hailed the peaceful process as a historic achievement, signifying progress for the region and reinforcing democratic values.
