Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed plans for the abolition of tolls across India under the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Gadkari declared, “We are going to abolish tolls…Now this work will be done on a satellite basis.” He outlined the implementation of a satellite-based toll collection system, wherein fees will be deducted directly from commuters’ accounts based on the distance traveled. This initiative aims to streamline travel, saving both time and money for citizens. Gadkari highlighted the remarkable reduction in travel time from Mumbai to Pune, now reduced to 2 hours from the previous 9 hours.
Furthermore, the Modi government is set to introduce electric buses (e-buses) across all Indian cities within the next five years. Gadkari emphasized the environmental and economic benefits of this move, stating that the decline in battery prices will result in a 30 percent reduction in bus fares. Additionally, the deployment of e-buses on long routes such as Delhi-Shimla, Delhi-Chandigarh, and Mumbai-Pune is underway, promising greener and more affordable transportation alternatives for the public.
