In a significant development, former Supreme Court Judge Justice AM Khanwilkar has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Lokpal, filling the position that had been vacant since May 27, 2022, following the retirement of former Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh. President Draupadi Murmu announced the appointment, with Justice Khanwilkar officially assuming the role of Ombudsman.
Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohante, who was serving as the executive chairman, will continue as the judicial member of the Lokpal. Additionally, Justices Lingappa Narayan Swamy (retd), Sanjay Yadav, and Ritu Awasthi have been appointed as Judicial Members, while Sushil Chandra, Pankaj Kumar, and Ajay Tirke take on the roles of non-judicial members.
Justice Khanwilkar, who retired from the Supreme Court in July 2022, brings a wealth of experience to the position. The new appointments mark a significant step in rejuvenating the Lokpal, reinforcing its role as a crucial institution in upholding transparency and accountability. The diverse composition of the Lokpal, comprising both judicial and non-judicial members, underscores a balanced approach in addressing issues of public concern. The nation awaits the contributions of the revamped Lokpal under the leadership of Justice AM Khanwilkar.
