In a decisive move, the political parties in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have unanimously elected Narendra Modi as their leader, paving the way for him to become the Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term. The newly elected members of parliament from the NDA will hold a meeting on June 7 to formally elect Mr. Modi as their leader, after which they will present their claim to form the government to President Draupadi Murmu. Sources suggest that the new government could be sworn in on Saturday or Sunday.

The pivotal meeting took place at Mr. Modi’s official residence, attended by key NDA figures including TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, actor and Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Lok Janshakti Party’s Chirag Paswan, JDS leader H.D. Deve Gowda, NCP leader Praful Patel, and AGP’s Atul Bora, along with senior BJP leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and JP Nadda. A total of 21 leaders from 16 parties were present.

Following the meeting, former Bihar Chief Minister and Hindustan Awam Morcha leader Jitan Ram Manjhi informed reporters that the NDA partners would meet President Murmu on June 7 to present their claim to form the government. Sanjay Jha of Janata Dal (United) confirmed that all formalities for the formation of the new government under Mr. Modi’s leadership would be completed soon, highlighting the unanimous support for Mr. Modi.

During the meeting, a resolution was passed reaffirming the NDA government’s commitment to working for the poor, women, youth, farmers, and weaker sections of society. The resolution emphasized the government’s focus on raising the standard of living and ensuring the preservation of the country’s heritage. It proudly noted that the NDA had fought and won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections under Mr. Modi’s leadership, citing the development seen in every field over the past ten years.

In the recently concluded elections, the NDA secured more than the required 272 seats to form the government, although the BJP fell short of a majority on its own with 240 seats. This necessitated reliance on its coalition partners. The meeting also showcased the close association between the BJP and its partners, with prominent leaders like Chandrababu Naidu, Nitish Kumar, and Eknath Shinde prominently seated alongside Mr. Modi.

During the meeting, Mr. Modi stated that the NDA had received a historic mandate to form the government for a third term. NDA partners lauded Mr. Modi for his clear vision of a ‘developed India,’ reaffirming their collective commitment to the nation’s progress.
