Mumbai has recorded its first death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare nerve disorder, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The deceased, a 53-year-old man from Wadala, worked as a ward boy in a hospital.

According to officials, he had recently traveled to Pune before falling ill. He was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on January 23 in critical condition and remained under treatment for several days. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on Tuesday. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani confirmed that this was the first recorded GBS-related death in the city.

GBS is a rare autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to weakness, numbness, and in severe cases, paralysis. The exact cause is unknown, but it often follows a viral or bacterial infection.

Earlier, Mumbai had reported its first confirmed GBS case on February 7, when a 64-year-old woman from Andheri (East) was diagnosed with the disorder. While GBS is uncommon, medical experts emphasize early diagnosis and treatment to prevent severe complications.

Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, though officials have not indicated any outbreak.
