Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a brief meeting during the ASEAN Summit in Laos. Relations between India and Canada have been strained since Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Nijhar in Canada about a year ago. Trudeau claimed in a press conference in
Vientiane that he raised the issue with Modi, emphasizing the need for further action to protect Canadian citizens.

Trudeau stated that his government remains committed to maintaining the rule of law and that protecting the Canadian people is a priority. He mentioned a concerning pattern of violence targeting Indian-Canadians in recent months, which Canada is addressing seriously. Trudeau also reaffirmed his accusations and noted that national security agencies are still investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, sources in New Delhi downplayed the meeting, suggesting that no serious discussions took place. However, Indian officials have stressed the need for Canada to prevent anti-Indian activities on its soil. They have called for strict measures against individuals promoting violence, extremism, and terrorism against India in Canada.

The diplomatic tension between the two countries continues, with India insisting on action against groups advocating for violence, while Trudeau stands firm on his allegations and the ongoing investigation by Canadian security agencies. Both sides appear determined to protect their respective national interests amid this strained relationship.
