An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck near Puri at 6:10 am on Tuesday, causing panic among residents. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the quake occurred at a depth of 91 km in the Bay of Bengal.
Though the earthquake was of moderate intensity, its depth helped reduce the impact on land. Tremors were felt in several parts of Odisha, including Satwa, but no major damage was reported. Many people rushed out of their homes in fear as the ground shook briefly.
Authorities have assured the public that there is no immediate threat. Disaster management teams are monitoring the situation, and officials have urged people to remain calm.
This is not the first time the region has experienced tremors, as Odisha falls in a zone where mild to moderate earthquakes are not uncommon. However, experts say that deep-seated quakes like this one are less likely to cause widespread damage.
The IMD continues to keep a close watch on seismic activity in the region. Meanwhile, locals remain alert, hoping that no aftershocks follow this early morning tremor.
