Villupuram: A coach of the Villupuram-Puducherry MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train derailed near Villupuram early Tuesday morning, officials said. The train, carrying about 500 passengers, left Villupuram station at 5:25 am and derailed while crossing a bend.
The loco pilot spotted the derailment immediately and brought the train to a halt, averting a major accident. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in the incident.
Train services on the Villupuram-Puducherry route were disrupted following the derailment. Services remained suspended from 5:25 am to 8:30 am. The affected route was restored within three hours, minimizing inconvenience to passengers.
An inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Officials stated that the findings of the investigation would be shared once the inquiry is completed.
The Villupuram-Puducherry MEMU train is a short-distance passenger train that covers a distance of approximately 38 km. It is a key mode of transportation for daily commuters between the two destinations.
Thanks to the loco pilot’s alertness and quick action, a larger tragedy was avoided, bringing relief to passengers and authorities alike. Further measures are expected to ensure the safety and reliability of services on this route.
