The Manipur government has set up a special cell to address the increasing extortion activities carried out by underground groups and gangs, the state police announced today. IGP (Intelligence) K. Kabib stated that the situation has worsened over the past 16 months, with extortion activities growing on a large scale.
Since the outbreak of caste violence on May 3, 2023, various underground groups and criminal gangs have intensified their operations, targeting truckers on highways, traders, and even educational institutions under the guise of donations. These illegal activities have caused distress among the public and disrupted business operations in the state.
In response, the government has established an anti-extortion cell to combat this growing menace. The cell will focus on cracking down on these groups and providing relief to those affected by extortion.
IGP Kabib emphasized that the police will take strict action against those involved in illegal recovery activities and urged the public to report any such incidents. The creation of this special unit reflects the government’s commitment to restoring order and protecting the community from the increasing threats posed by these criminal elements.
