Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, today criticized the President’s speech, describing it as ‘grossly disappointing’ and merely a compilation of praises for the government. Kharge asserted that the speech lacked both direction and vision.

Participating in the debate on the motion of thanks for the President’s speech in the Upper House of Parliament, Kharge emphasized the need for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) to be examined under the supervision of the Supreme Court. He also called for the conduct of a caste-based census and demanded the cancellation of the Agniveer Yojana, a government recruitment scheme.

Kharge accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining constitutional institutions, stating that there is no place for arrogance in a democracy. He said, “The subject matter of the President’s speech is official. The government side was supposed to make it a vision card and explain how to tackle the challenges, but there is nothing like that in it.”

Kharge’s remarks have sparked significant debate, highlighting the ongoing political tensions and differing viewpoints within Parliament. His call for judicial oversight of NEET-UG and a caste-based census are likely to generate further discussion and scrutiny in the coming days.
