The proceedings of the Lok Sabha were adjourned for 30 minutes following a heated argument between Punjab Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi and BJP’s Ravneet Singh Bittu. The altercation erupted during a debate on the Union Budget when Channi referenced the assassination of Bittu’s grandfather, former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
Channi remarked, “Bittu ji, your grandfather was a martyr, but he died when you left the Congress.” This comment provoked a fierce exchange of words between the two MPs. Bittu retorted, “My grandfather Beant Singh died for the country, not for the Congress,” and further accused Channi of corruption, saying, “Channi is the most corrupt man in Punjab. Where did the money come from to become a rich man?”
The personal nature of the remarks led to an uproar in the House, with members from both sides engaging in a verbal confrontation. The Speaker intervened and adjourned the session for 30 minutes to restore order.
The incident highlights the intense political rivalries and personal animosities that can surface during parliamentary debates, often overshadowing substantive discussions on policy issues. The adjournment served as a cooling-off period, allowing tempers to settle before the proceedings could resume.
