Kiran Rao’s film Lapata Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscar Awards. The Film Federation of India announced that this Hindi movie, which is a light-hearted satire on patriarchy, will compete in the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards.
Lapata Ladies was selected from a pool of 29 films, including popular Bollywood hit Animal, Malayalam National Award-winning film Attam, and Cannes winner All We Imagine as Light. The selection was made by a 13-member committee, headed by renowned Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua.
The committee unanimously chose Lapata Ladies for its unique take on social issues, making it a standout choice for the Oscars. Directed by Kiran Rao and co-produced by Aamir Khan, the film brings humor and sharp commentary on traditional gender roles, resonating with both critics and audiences.
This selection marks an important step for Indian cinema, as Lapata Ladies will now represent the country on the global stage at the prestigious Academy Awards. The filmmakers and cast are thrilled with the recognition and hope the film will make a strong impact internationally.
