In a shocking turn of events in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kishori Lal Sharma of the Congress Party has emerged victorious in the Amethi constituency of Uttar Pradesh, defeating BJP’s Smriti Irani by a significant margin of 1,67,196 votes. Sharma secured 5,39,228 votes, while Irani garnered 3,72,032 votes. This result marks a dramatic reversal from the previous election, where Smriti Irani had defeated former Congress President Rahul Gandhi from the same seat.
Kishori Lal Sharma’s victory has drawn widespread attention, given his deep-rooted connections with the Gandhi family and his long-standing political involvement in the region. A resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, Sharma’s association with the Gandhi family began in 1983 when he entered Rae Bareli and Amethi with Rajiv Gandhi. Over the years, Sharma’s relationship with the Gandhi family evolved into a close, familial bond, especially after the tragic assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
Throughout his career, Sharma has played a pivotal role in supporting key Congress figures such as Sheila Kaul and Satish Sharma. His dedication to the party remained unwavering even as Sonia Gandhi stepped into active politics and contested from Amethi. When Sonia Gandhi transitioned to the Rae Bareli constituency and handed over Amethi to Rahul Gandhi, Kishori Lal Sharma took on the responsibility of managing the parliamentary affairs of both constituencies.
Sharma’s steadfast loyalty to the Congress Party and the Gandhi family has been a hallmark of his political journey. Despite many political figures deserting the Congress over the years, Sharma’s commitment never faltered.
