Kanhaiya Kumar, the Congress candidate from Northeast Delhi, was attacked today as he exited a party meeting. The incident took place outside the AAP office in New Umsmanpur area. According to local councilor Chhaiya Sharma, who was with Kumar at the time, the attack was sudden and unprovoked.
“Some persons came and started giving necklaces to Kanhaiya Kumar. After this, some persons threw ink on Kanhaiya and tried to beat him up,” Sharma said in his complaint. The attackers managed to throw ink on Kumar and attempted to physically assault him before being restrained.
The incident has sparked outrage among Kumar’s supporters and the broader Congress community. Party members have condemned the attack as a cowardly act aimed at intimidating their candidate. Kumar, a prominent figure in Indian politics, is known for his vocal criticism of various government policies and has been a target of such attacks in the past.
The police have registered a complaint and are investigating the matter. Security for Kumar has been increased following the incident. Kumar has urged his supporters to remain calm and not retaliate, emphasizing the need for peaceful and democratic means to address political differences.
The incident highlights the rising tensions in the run-up to the elections, with candidates facing increased hostility and violence. The Congress party has called for stringent action against the perpetrators to ensure a safe and fair electoral process.
