The India Alliance has emerged victorious in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, with the National Conference (NC) leading the charge by securing 42 seats. Congress followed with six seats, while CPI-M won one seat, bringing the alliance’s total to 49 seats, surpassing the 46-seat majority required to form the government.
On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 29 seats, an improvement of four seats compared to the previous election. Despite the gain, the BJP fell short of the majority, and the party’s Jammu and Kashmir president has submitted his resignation to the high command, acknowledging the defeat.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) managed to win only three seats, a sharp decline from the 28 seats it secured in the previous assembly elections. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) marked its debut in Jammu and Kashmir by winning a single seat.
National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah announced that the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir would be his son, Umar Abdullah. Umar Abdullah, a seasoned political leader, won from two constituencies—Budgam and Ganderbal—solidifying his leadership in the region.
This election marks a significant political shift in Jammu and Kashmir, with the India Alliance poised to lead the new government.
