As young doctors in Kolkata continue their indefinite hunger strike over the rape and murder of a fellow doctor, Dr. RV Ashokan, head of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), voiced strong concerns about the ongoing mistreatment of doctors. He stated that doctors have long been “easy targets” and emphasized that a grave injustice has been done to the medical community.
In a statement shared by IMA on social media, Dr. Ashokan criticized the systemic issues affecting doctors in India, calling them “slaves bound by the bond system” from the beginning of their careers. His remarks highlight the deep-seated problems facing the medical profession, particularly the undue pressure and lack of protection for doctors.
Referring to the tragic incident at RG Kar Hospital, Dr. Ashokan said that it has exposed the corruption prevalent in medical colleges across the country. He stressed the urgent need for reforms to address these issues and ensure better working conditions and safety for doctors.
The ongoing hunger strike by young doctors reflects the growing frustration within the medical community, with calls for justice and institutional reform growing louder. The situation continues to escalate as authorities face increasing pressure to address their concerns.
