Mumbai grappled with severe weather conditions as relentless rainfall inundated the city, causing widespread flooding in low-lying areas and disrupting essential services. In just six hours, Mumbai recorded over 300 mm of rainfall, severely impacting daily life and infrastructure.
The heavy downpour significantly reduced visibility at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, leading to the cancellation of approximately 50 flights. Train services across Mumbai were also severely affected, with delays and diversions reported on various routes, affecting thousands of commuters.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde advised residents to remain indoors and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Schools and colleges remained closed in light of the challenging weather conditions, further disrupting educational activities.
Authorities and emergency services have been deployed to manage the situation, with efforts focused on draining waterlogged areas and restoring normalcy as quickly as possible. The incessant rainfall underscores the vulnerability of Mumbai’s infrastructure during the monsoon season, prompting renewed calls for improved urban planning and drainage systems to mitigate future disruptions.
