In a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gyanesh Kumar has been approved as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The Law Ministry has also issued a notification regarding his appointment. Kumar, a 1988 batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, has been serving as an Election Commissioner since March last year. He will assume the role after the retirement of the current CEC, Rajiv Kumar, on February 18.
Rajiv Kumar, who took charge as the 25th CEC on May 15, 2022, supervised several key elections during his tenure. He oversaw the 2022 Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections, along with assembly elections in 11 states. His term will officially end on February 18, 2025.
Meanwhile, Dr. Vivek Joshi, a 1989 batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner. His appointment will be effective from the date he assumes office.
