In a significant announcement, Union Minister Piyush Goyal has assured that the government is prepared to purchase crops from farmers in case market prices for jute and cotton dip below the minimum support price (MSP). Goyal, who serves as the Union Minister of Textiles, Consumer Affairs and Food, Public Distribution, and Commerce and Industry, emphasized the government’s commitment to boosting jute and cotton production. He stated that the focus is on ensuring high-quality seeds and fertilizers to align with the vision of agricultural exports.

During an interaction with beneficiaries in the textile sector, Goyal urged them to embrace the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to elevate Indian products globally. The minister highlighted the potential of increasing textile production, asserting that it would not only boost income but also generate employment opportunities. Furthermore, he underlined the pivotal role textile production plays in fostering the nation’s self-reliance.

Goyal’s remarks come in the context of the government’s broader strategy to support farmers and fortify the agricultural sector. The commitment to intervene if market prices fall below MSP aims to provide a safety net for farmers, ensuring their livelihoods are safeguarded. As the government lays the groundwork for agricultural self-sufficiency, Goyal’s assurances signal a proactive stance toward supporting the backbone of the nation—its farmers.
