An 18-year-old first-year MBBS student died due to ragging at GMERS Medical College in Patan district, Gujarat. The tragic incident occurred when senior students reportedly forced Anil Methania, a hostel resident, to stand for three hours. Methania lost consciousness during the ordeal and passed away while being taken to the hospital.
Dr. Hardik Shah, Dean of GMERS Medical College and Hospital, confirmed the incident and stated that the college’s anti-ragging committee has initiated an investigation. He assured that strict action will be taken against the accused students involved in the incident.
The death has shocked the college community, raising serious concerns about the enforcement of anti-ragging measures. Ragging, which is banned under Indian law, remains a recurring issue in educational institutions despite preventive guidelines.
Methania’s death has triggered outrage, with students and parents demanding accountability and justice. Authorities are under pressure to identify and penalize those responsible, ensuring such incidents are not repeated.
This tragic case highlights the need for stricter monitoring and immediate intervention in ragging-related complaints to protect students’ safety and well-being in educational institutions.
