Authorities will press charges against the father of a 17-year-old involved in a fatal car accident and the bar that allegedly served him liquor, Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar announced on Sunday. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
The incident took place at around 3:15 am in Kalyani Nagar. The 17-year-old, driving a luxury car, collided with a motorcycle, killing its two riders on the spot. The victims were identified as Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. Following the crash, the car hit roadside pavement railings and the driver was detained.
Police stated that the juvenile was produced in a juvenile court and granted bail. In addition to the charges against the young driver, legal action is being initiated against his father and the bar that served him alcohol. They are being charged under Sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act. Section 75 penalizes those who have control over a child and cause them mental or physical harm through neglect or abuse, while Section 77 pertains to providing alcohol or drugs to minors.
The accident occurred as a group of friends, returning home from a party at a local restaurant, were riding their motorbikes near the Kalyani Nagar junction. The luxury car, driven at high speed, struck one of the motorcycles, causing the fatalities. Eyewitnesses captured a video showing bystanders assaulting the teen driver as he emerged from the wrecked car.
A case has been registered at Yerawada police station against the minor under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 279 (rash driving), Section 304A (causing death by negligence), Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life), and Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life), as well as provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The investigation continues as the police gather more evidence regarding the involvement of the bar and the responsibilities of the teen’s father in the tragic incident.
