The family of a doctor who was the victim of a brutal rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata last month has accused the Kolkata Police of suppressing the case by hastily cremating the body. The victim’s parents, along with other hospital doctors, staged a protest, alleging that they were not allowed to see the body, which remained at the police station until it was taken for post-mortem. They also claimed that a senior police officer attempted to offer them money after the incident was brought to light, which they immediately refused.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with protests erupting across the country as people demand justice for the young doctor. The Kolkata Police have arrested a civilian volunteer in connection with the rape and murder. However, due to mounting public pressure and allegations of a cover-up, the Calcutta High Court ordered the case to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the second week of August.
The CBI has since taken charge of the investigation and, on Monday, arrested Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. The case continues to unfold as the demand for justice intensifies.
