In a major political setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), senior leader and Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot resigned from the party Yesterday. Ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Gehlot’s departure has stirred controversy.
Gehlot, who represents the Nazafgarh constituency, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Atishi and relinquished his cabinet role with immediate effect. In a separate letter to AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal, he also ended his primary membership in the party.
Sharing his resignation on the social media platform ‘X’, Gehlot criticized the party’s recent controversies, including the ‘Sheeshamhal’ episode, referring to Kejriwal’s residence scandal. He accused the leadership of prioritizing personal agendas over public welfare.
Gehlot alleged that the focus on internal conflicts has disrupted basic services in Delhi. “Instead of fighting for the rights of Delhiites, you are busy serving your own interests,” he wrote.
So far, AAP has not issued any statement addressing Gehlot’s claims or resignation. This high-profile exit is expected to impact the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections. Political analysts predict intensified challenges for AAP amidst internal rifts.
