The Delhi High Court will hear the bail application of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid on October 7. Khalid was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged involvement in plotting the communal riots that took place in North East Delhi in February 2020.

The communal violence in North East Delhi resulted in the death of over 50 people and injuries to hundreds, with widespread damage to property. The riots erupted after protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) escalated into clashes between supporters and opponents of the law.

In addition to Umar Khalid, the bail applications of several co-accused in the case will also be heard. This includes student activists Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima, and Khalid Saifi, who is the founder of the activist group ‘United Against Hate.’ Their bail pleas have been listed for a fresh hearing before a division bench comprising Justice Naveen Chawla and Justice Shalinder Kaur.

The accused have consistently denied the allegations and claimed that they have been targeted for their involvement in anti-CAA protests.
