The death toll from last week’s devastating earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 3,085 as rescue teams continue to recover more bodies. The military-led government confirmed the updated figures, while humanitarian groups are working to provide medical care and shelter to survivors.
According to a brief statement from the army, 4,715 people have been injured, and 341 remain missing. The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck last Friday near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The disaster caused widespread destruction, with buildings collapsing, roads cracking, and bridges being destroyed. Local media reports suggest the actual number of casualties may be higher than official estimates. Due to large-scale communication outages and difficulty in reaching remote areas, authorities believe the death toll could rise further as more details emerge.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that four hospitals and health centers were completely destroyed, while 32 hospitals and 18 health centers suffered partial damage. With local medical facilities overwhelmed, India has set up a mobile hospital, and a joint Russia-Belarus hospital is also operating in Mandalay to assist those in need.
Rescue and relief efforts continue despite challenges, but authorities warn that many affected areas still lack essential services. International aid groups are urging for more support to help the thousands who have lost their homes and loved ones.
