The Indian Home Ministry has provided ‘Z’ category security to Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The decision was made after a security review by central intelligence agencies. Earlier, he had a small security cover from the Himachal Pradesh Police, and whenever he traveled outside the state, local police provided him protection. Now, the responsibility of his security has been given to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Under the ‘Z’ category security, the Dalai Lama will be protected by 33 CRPF commandos. This includes 10 armed static guards at his residence and security personnel who will always be on duty. This move aims to enhance his safety and deal with any possible threats.
The Dalai Lama, 89, is a respected spiritual leader worldwide. He has been living in India since 1959 after fleeing Tibet. He resides in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, and frequently travels within India and abroad for religious and public events.
In a similar decision, the Home Ministry has also provided ‘Z’ category security to BJP leader Sambit Patra in Manipur. Patra, 50, is the MP from Puri and the BJP in-charge for Manipur, where ethnic violence has been ongoing for the past two years. His security was increased based on a threat report from the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
Providing ‘Z’ category security ensures high-level protection for individuals facing potential threats. This step by the Indian government highlights the importance of safeguarding prominent figures like the Dalai Lama and political leaders working in sensitive regions. With CRPF commandos now responsible for the Dalai Lama’s security, his safety measures have been significantly strengthened.
