According to officials, the accused, Havildar Sanjay Kumar, was posted with the 120th battalion of the CRPF. For reasons yet to be determined, he suddenly opened fire on his colleagues. A constable and a sub-inspector died on the spot, while eight other personnel sustained injuries.

After the firing, Kumar turned his weapon on himself and committed suicide. The injured personnel were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the shooting. As of now, no official statement has been issued by the CRPF regarding the incident.

Incidents of fratricide—where security personnel turn their weapons on fellow soldiers—are a growing concern within armed forces and paramilitary units. Experts often point to factors such as stress, long duty hours, and personal disputes as potential triggers.

The tragic event in Imphal has once again highlighted the need for mental health support and better conflict resolution mechanisms within security forces. Meanwhile, security officials are conducting a detailed inquiry to understand the exact circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident.
