The Congress party has accused the Modi government of jeopardizing national security with the Agnipath military recruitment scheme. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that an ‘India’ coalition government would cancel this program, which he labeled a “national security threat.”
In a post on X, Kharge criticized the Agnipath scheme for slashing annual military recruitment from 75,000 to 40,000, potentially compromising the country’s defense capabilities in the coming decade. He questioned whether the Defense Minister’s repeated promises to review and amend the Agniveer scheme indicate underlying issues.
Kharge also expressed concern that the Department of Military Affairs and the Army are not addressing the declining soldier recruitment, which could peak by the decade’s end. He emphasized that India faces increasing encroachments and needs a robust military, arguing that the Agnipath scheme undermines this necessity.
The Congress leader assured that the party is committed to reversing the scheme to protect the careers of patriotic youth and strengthen national security. “The Modi government is playing with India’s national security through Agnipath, and Congress guarantees to cancel it,” Kharge affirmed.
