The Congress party has raised concerns over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued refusal to visit Manipur, a state that has been grappling with violence since May 2023. This comes as Modi arrived in Vientiane, Laos, today to participate in the ASEAN-India and East Asia Summits.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed the party’s disapproval, stating, “Northeast is India’s gateway to ASEAN, yet the Prime Minister continues to ignore Manipur’s plight.” Ramesh emphasized that while Modi is attending international meetings in Laos, he has yet to visit Manipur, where the people are enduring great hardship due to the ongoing unrest.
Ramesh’s remarks reflect the Congress’s stance that the situation in Manipur requires the Prime Minister’s direct attention and presence. “This needs to be said again and again. The people of Manipur, who are forced to suffer so much pain, deserve a visit from their Prime Minister,” he added.
The Congress has been consistently urging Modi to address the situation in Manipur and engage with the affected communities. The party believes that a visit to the violence-stricken state would demonstrate solidarity and support for those suffering from the crisis.
