Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized the importance of judicial independence during his speech at the ‘Bhutan Distinguished Speakers’ Forum, part of the Jigme Singye Wangchuk Lecture Series in Bhutan. He highlighted that judges must make decisions based on constitutional and legal principles, without being swayed by popular opinion.
Justice Chandrachud discussed how a strong judiciary is essential for the credibility and functioning of a constitutional system. He pointed out that institutional trust in courts is key to a prosperous legal framework, ensuring that citizens continue to have faith in the judicial system. According to the Chief Justice, maintaining credibility and independence in decision-making fosters confidence in the rule of law.
By focusing on these values, he stressed that the judiciary’s role is to protect and uphold the Constitution, even in challenging times. Chandrachud’s remarks underlined the need for courts to remain impartial and free from external pressures, thereby preserving the integrity of the judicial process.
