Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has emphasized the importance of law students learning regional languages and local laws to make the legal system more accessible. Speaking at the Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted a significant barrier to justice: many people cannot understand their legal rights because they do not know English.

In his address, CJI Chandrachud noted that while English is the predominant language in legal education and court proceedings, a substantial portion of the population remains excluded from fully engaging with the legal system due to language barriers. He stressed that law students and practitioners should be proficient in regional languages to bridge this gap and ensure that legal services are available to all, regardless of their linguistic background.

“Understanding and communicating in regional languages is crucial for lawyers to effectively serve their clients and uphold justice,” Chandrachud stated. He urged law schools to incorporate regional languages and local laws into their curricula, fostering a more inclusive and accessible legal system.

This call to action is part of a broader movement to make legal processes more comprehensible and approachable for the general public. By promoting the study of regional languages and local laws, the legal community can better support citizens in understanding and exercising their rights, thus strengthening the rule of law in India.
