Despite the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) strict directives issued on February 5 prohibiting the use of children in election-related activities under the Protection of Child Rights Act 2005, violations are rampant in Malerkotla and Ludhiana districts. Children are frequently seen raising slogans, carrying party flags, and performing songs and poems that promote political agendas.

The ECI directive emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards involving children in the electoral process, yet this mandate is being ignored. Parents, lured by promises of sweets, toys, and gifts, willingly bring their children to rallies and meetings. The safety and rights of these young participants are being compromised as a result.

In the Assembly segments of Amargarh, Raikot, and Payal within the Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, as well as Gill, Dakha, and Jagraon in the Ludhiana constituency, organizers have shown blatant disregard for the ECI’s guidelines.

Despite government personnel attending these rallies, none have reported the ongoing violations, highlighting a significant lapse in enforcement and oversight of child protection laws during the electoral process.
