The Union Home Ministry announced the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The official notification stated that President Droupadi Murmu believes the state’s governance cannot continue in accordance with constitutional provisions. Consequently, the Manipur Legislative Assembly has been suspended for the duration of President’s rule.

This development comes amid prolonged ethnic violence between the majority Meitei and minority Kuki communities, which began in 2023. The conflict has resulted in at least 250 deaths and displaced thousands. Tensions escalated after a court suggested extending economic benefits and job quotas to the Meitei community, intensifying disputes over resources and representation.

N. Biren Singh, a Meitei leader and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), resigned from his position as Chief Minister on February 9, 2025, amid mounting pressure from opposition groups and internal allies. Following his resignation, the state’s Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, was appointed to oversee the administration during this period of direct federal control.

The imposition of President’s rule has been a subject of debate. The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has expressed strong opposition to this move, advocating instead for a democratically elected government to uphold stability and safeguard democracy in the state.

This marks the eleventh instance of President’s rule being imposed in Manipur, reflecting the state’s ongoing challenges in maintaining political stability and effective governance.
