A day after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned, senior BJP leader Sambit Patra held a closed-door meeting with several BJP MLAs at a hotel today. The meeting aimed to discuss the party’s next steps, sources said.
According to sources, Patra met Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrat, Municipal Administration Housing Development Minister Y Khemchand, Education Minister Thonaojam Basant Kumar Singh, and BJP MLA Radheshyam. Reports suggest that three of them had strained relations with Biren Singh.
More meetings with BJP MLAs are expected in the next 48 hours to finalize a new leader for the state.
With the ongoing political developments, security has been tightened in the state capital, particularly in sensitive areas like Sanjenthong, Singjamei, Moirangkhom, Kisampat, and Kangla Gate. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation to maintain law and order.
Congress Welcomes Resignation, Opposes President’s Rule
State Congress President Meghachandra welcomed Biren Singh’s resignation but strongly opposed any move to impose President’s rule in Manipur.
He said, “Congress wants a new leader and a new government. The central government must respect the people’s mandate.”
Meghachandra also claimed that Biren Singh resigned because he knew he would lose the no-confidence motion in the assembly.
With political uncertainty in Manipur, all eyes are now on the BJP’s next decision regarding the new leadership.
