In response to a series of bridge collapses across the state, the Bihar government has suspended 15 engineers. A senior official stated that this decision followed a report submitted by an investigation panel to the Water Resources Department (WRD).
Chaitanya Prasad, the Additional Chief Secretary of WRD, revealed that the investigation found negligence on the part of the engineers, who failed to properly supervise the projects. “The primary cause of the collapse of causeways and small bridges in the state is the engineers’ negligence and improper monitoring of the projects,” Prasad stated. Among the suspended officials are three executive engineers.
Officials reported that over the past 17 days, a total of 10 bridges have collapsed in the districts of Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj. These incidents have raised serious concerns about the quality of infrastructure and the oversight of construction projects in Bihar.
The government’s swift action to suspend the engineers underscores its commitment to addressing the lapses and ensuring the safety and integrity of public infrastructure. As investigations continue, further measures may be taken to prevent such incidents in the future and hold those responsible accountable.
